When You Need Custom Engineering

Most motor control applications fit standard patterns: a feeder, a starter, maybe a VFD. But some applications require custom logic, multiple motors in sequence, special interlocks, or integration with existing control systems. That's where our engineering team comes in.

We're a UL 508 certified facility. Tell us what your application needs to do, and we'll design a control solution that fits in your MCC, meets code, and actually works the way you need it to.

Custom Applications We've Built

Multi-Motor Sequential Control

Control 2-4 motors in a specific sequence with programmed start delays, load monitoring, and automatic shutdown on fault. Common for conveyor systems, pump stations, or process equipment where startup order matters.

Example: Wastewater lift station with lead/lag pump control and alternation logic

PLC-Based Control Buckets

Integrate a PLC (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, etc.) into an MCC bucket for complex logic, data logging, or communication with supervisory systems. Includes power supply, I/O modules, and all necessary interfaces.

Example: Batch process controller with recipe management and remote monitoring

VFD with Bypass & Redundancy

VFD bucket with automatic bypass contactor for emergency operation if the drive fails. Includes bypass interlock logic, isolation switching, and status indication. Can be manual or automatic transfer.

Example: Critical HVAC fan that must keep running even if VFD fails

Dual-Speed / Multi-Speed Motors

Control buckets for two-speed motors (separate windings) or multi-speed applications using pole-changing contactors. Includes interlocking to prevent simultaneous speed energization and programmable transition logic.

Example: Cooling tower fan with high/low speed operation

Reduced Voltage Auto-Transformer Starters

Old-school reduced voltage starting using auto-transformers for large motors. We still build these when soft starters or VFDs aren't appropriate. Includes start/run transition logic and timer control.

Example: 500 HP motor in facility with limited fault current capacity

Wye-Delta Reduced Voltage Starting

Two-step starting using wye-delta transition for motors with six leads. Reduces inrush to 33% of full voltage starting. Includes timers, contactors, and proper interlocking.

Example: Large compressor or crusher motor with limited power supply

Process Interlocks & Permissives

Motor control with extensive interlocking: won't start unless valves are in position, upstream equipment is running, safety switches are made, or other conditions are met. Hard-wired safety logic with status indication.

Example: Conveyor won't start if downstream conveyor is off or if safety gates are open

Special Voltage / Frequency

Control buckets for non-standard voltages (115V, 347V, 575V) or special frequencies (25Hz, 50Hz, 400Hz). Includes proper component selection and control power transformation.

Example: 347V lighting control bucket for Canadian facility

Motor-Generator Set Control

Starting and control logic for motor-generator sets requiring special sequencing, synchronization checking, or load transfer logic. Can integrate with automatic transfer switches.

Example: Backup generator control with utility/generator transfer logic

Our Engineering Process

1

Application Review

Describe your application in detail: what needs to start, in what order, under what conditions, and what should happen if something goes wrong. We'll ask clarifying questions to understand all the requirements.

2

Preliminary Design

We sketch out a control approach and component list. You get a basic schematic showing how it will work, along with a quote for engineering and fabrication.

3

Detailed Engineering

Complete control schematics, panel layout, and bill of materials. Load calculations, short-circuit analysis, and coordination if needed. You approve the design before we build anything.

4

Fabrication & Programming

Build the bucket, wire per the approved drawings, and program any logic controllers. All wiring is labeled and routed properly. Clean, professional work.

5

Testing & Documentation

Bench test every control function and sequence. You get as-built drawings, test reports, PLC code (if applicable), and O&M manuals. UL 508 compliant.

Why Custom Engineer?

  • Get exactly what your application needs, not "close enough"
  • Professional engineering and documentation
  • UL 508 certification for compliance
  • One vendor responsible for the complete solution
  • Tested and proven before it ships
  • Long-term support and troubleshooting

Typical Timeline

Preliminary Design
3-5 days after requirements discussion
Detailed Engineering
1-2 weeks for schematics and approval
