What is an MCC Feeder Bucket?
An MCC feeder bucket is a motor control center component that provides power distribution and overcurrent protection for electrical loads. Unlike starter buckets that include motor control devices, feeder buckets are simpler units containing only a circuit breaker or fused disconnect switch.
Feeder buckets are commonly used to supply power to remote panels, lighting circuits, auxiliary equipment, or downstream distribution systems. They serve as the primary disconnect and protection device while keeping your MCC organized and code-compliant.
Feeder Buckets for VFD Installations
This is one of the fastest-growing applications we see. Many states and local jurisdictions now require that any motor 50 HP or larger must be replaced with a variable frequency drive (VFD) when the motor is changed out. This is driven by energy efficiency codes based on ASHRAE 90.1 and DOE motor efficiency standards.
Here's how it works: Instead of putting the VFD inside the MCC bucket, the VFD is installed at or near the motor. Then a feeder bucket in the MCC sends 200A-400A of power to the remote VFD location. This approach is becoming more popular than VFD-in-bucket installations for several reasons:
Why Remote VFD + Feeder Bucket?
- → Keeps VFD heat out of the MCC lineup
- → Shorter motor cable runs reduce harmonic issues
- → Easier VFD maintenance without MCC shutdown
- → No bucket height restrictions for larger drives
- → Simpler MCC bucket (feeder vs complex VFD bucket)
Common VFD Feeder Specs
- → 200A-400A breaker or fused disconnect
- → 480V, 3-phase power feed
- → 65kA AIC rating (typical)
- → 12" or 18" bucket height
- → Auxiliary contacts for remote status
We build VFD feeder buckets for every major MCC brand. If your plant is upgrading motors to VFDs to meet code requirements, we can have your feeder buckets built and shipped in 3-5 business days. We also build VFD-in-bucket configurations if your application calls for it, but the remote feeder approach is what most customers are moving to.
Available Configurations
Breaker-Style Feeders
Circuit breaker feeders offer convenient reset capability and adjustable trip settings. Available in frame sizes from 15A to 1200A with various AIC ratings (35kA, 65kA, 100kA). Ideal for applications requiring frequent disconnects or where fault protection is critical.
Fused Disconnect Feeders
Fused disconnect feeders provide reliable overcurrent protection with Class J, Class RK5, or other fuse types. Often more economical than breaker-style units and provide excellent short-circuit protection. Fuses sold separately or included based on your preference.
Dual Feeders
Some MCC models support dual feeder configurations, allowing two independent circuits in a single bucket. Perfect for space-constrained applications or when you need multiple smaller feeders grouped together.
